ABOUT THE SCHOOL
The School of Safety Science is the largest and most research intensive University School in Australia which focuses on safety, the environment, and general risk management. We offer undergraduate and postgraduate coursework and research degrees. Students range from school leavers in the Safety Science Major of the BSc to senior managers undertaking a postgraduate coursework degree. We also have students with significant experience working in safety or risk management related professions but no limited paper qualifications studying for their first professional qualification. Programs are designed to be flexible to suit the varied needs of students and are available, part time or full time, with internal or external study modes. The School has ten full time academic staff from different discipline backgrounds who work together to teach a broad base of courses and undertake interdisciplinary research. There are laboratory facilities for research in occupational and environmental toxicology and in biomechanics/ergonomics. We also conduct theoretical and workplace based research on human factors, risk, assessment, disaster management, and health safety and the environment
The School offers a Graduate Certificate, Graduate
Diploma and Masters degree in Risk management. These are aimed primarily
at people who are risk management professionals or intend to follow a
career in risk management. Risk management courses may also be taken separately
by managers in other areas wishing to upgrade their skills in risk management.
Research focuses on risk assessment techniques, disaster and emergency
management, and safety and environmental risk assessment and management. |
The School has offered postgraduate programs relating
to occupational health and safety since 1986. There is now a range of
safety related programs including Occupational Medicine, Industrial Safety,
Transport Safety, and Occupational Health and Safety. There is also a
Master of Safety Science which combines courses in both safety and environmental
management.
Health and safety related research includes musculo-skeletal injury, toxicology,
and safety management. |
The postgraduate Environmental Science programs are coordinated
by the School on behalf of the Faculty of Science and provide a 1 year
full time science focused program.
Environmental science courses also form part of the 18 month University
wide Master of Environmental Management.
Environmental research includes environmental toxicology and environmental
risk assessment. |
The School offers postgraduate coursework programs (Graduate Certificate,
Graduate Diploma and Masters of Science) in Safety, Health, and Environment
(SHE).
These programs are aimed at people who manage both OHS and environmental
risk in their work. It is possible to transfer between Health and Safety
and the SHE programs.
|
The Ergonomics Programs are an articulated set of three
specialist programs designed for professionals from other disciplines
to gain various levels of competency in ergonomics.
The human factors group undertakes research in biomechanics, with
a focus on sports injury, injury from impact, and from occupational
injury.
