Dr. Andrew McIntosh is an Associate Professor in Biomechanics at the School of Safety Science, and directs the Biomechanics and Gait Laboratory. He coordinates and lectures to undergraduate and postgraduate students from programs in Safety Science, Biomedical Engineering and Health and Sport Science. Dr. McIntosh has been an active researcher in the area of the biomechanics since 1992. His main research interests fall into two areas:

1. biomechanics of injury and injury prevention, and
2. biomechanics of movement and rehabilitation.

He has studied impact injuries that occur in transport and sporting accidents. In 1997 he co-authored a report to the NSW Motor Accidents Authority on the biomechanics of neck injury in rear-end collisions. This research combined experimental work involving crash simulations and numerical modelling. More recently he has been involved in studying head injury and helmet performance in sports. In 2000 he was awarded the FE Johnson Memorial Fellowship by the NSW Sporting Injuries Committee for his work on the biomechanics of concussion in football. This has been followed up by further work on the design and performance of helmets in projectile sports, as well as major projects studying the effectiveness of headgear in Australian football and rugby union. In 2001 he was invited to speak at the First International Symposium on Concussion in Sport on the topics of helmet function and injury risk management in sport. Dr. McIntosh is a member of the Standards Australia committees for pedal cycle helmets, Equestrian helmet and the helmet test methods.

In the area of the biomechanics of movement, he has been directing the biomechanical component of the clinical gait analysis service at Sydney Children's Hospital since 1998. Clinical gait analyses are undertaken in the biomechanics and gait laboratory. Research in this field has seen studies of upper limb motion and the effectiveness of BOTOX in treating spasticity. He is continuing biomechanics research into gait on inclines, sports injury, and the dynamics of movement in sports.
