Career prospects for people with Safety Science qualifications are excellent!
Organisations are becoming more aware of their legal and social responsibilities for safety and for the environment and it is increasingly recognised that these areas are not easy to manage and need specialist training.
Some examples of career roles include:
- Safety, Health and Environmental Management
This involves recognising problems and planning and implementing changes to bring about improvements. Issues such as industrial relations, people's attitudes to work and to safety and organisational structures and systems are important as well as an understanding the technical aspect of the work being done.
- Design
A visit to any workplace reveals many things that could be improved to make it a safer place to work and less likely to cause environmental damage.. Employers are keen to employ science graduates who have an understanding of the safety aspects of their work and can design work systems to improve safety performance.
- Education
Safety training is a big area as industry seeks to bring its employees up to speed on what they need to know and do to work in a safe way.
- Consulting
Many small companies cannot afford to employ a full time safety manager so will employ consultants who may be self employed or work for a larger consulting organisation. Safety Science consultants are also in demand for expert witness work in legal cases where people have been injured and are claiming compensation. There is at present a high demand for new graduates to enter consulting companies as trainee consultants.
