Administrative Details
This is a multidisciplinary program with approximately equal emphasis given to occupational health, management, ergonomics and safety engineering. It is designed to accept graduates from any discipline.

  • 48 Units of credit
  • 1 year full ttme/2 years part time
  • on or off campus study
  • Commonwealth supported course

Competencies
Students are expected to acquire the competencies and knowledge outlined for the Graduate Certificate in Safety Science at a level appropriate for their role as safety and health professionals or managers. In addition they should be able to:

  • understand the application of risk management principles to issues associated with safety
  • manage a program for the systematic identification of risks to safety, health and the environment
  • assess the adverse effects of physical chemical and biological hazards in the workplace
  • with the aid of appropriate experts, institute appropriate control of workplace hazards and risks
  • carry out a simple safety, health or environmental assessment of their workplace.

SESC9101, SESC9201, SESC9301 all require fundamental knowledge course(s) or equivalent knowledge as assumed knowledge

Substitution but not necessarily transfer credit may be awarded to students who can establish that they have equivalent knowledge in these courses. Where substitution is awarded, other approved postgraduate courses must be substituted. The range of electives available at UNSW in off-campus mode is more restricted than for on-campus students.

12 UOC of elective courses may be taken from courses offered by the School of Safety Science or from other Schools with the approval of the course and program authority.
