RESEARCH DEGREES

Postgraduate Research degrees at UNSW (PhD, MSc) are obtained by undertaking independent research on a specific topic under the guidance of a supervisor and submitting a thesis describing the work. Before submitting a formal application you should contact the School to discuss possible topics and supervisors.

Students who wish to enrol directly in a PhD are normally expected to have achieved an average of at least 75% in their undergraduate degree and to have demonstrated their research capability, for example through a good mark in an honours or Masters-by-coursework project. Students who do not have this background may enrol first in a Masters-by -Research (MSc) and then apply to transfer to a PhD after the first year of work.

Applications can be made online (http://www.grs.unsw.edu.au/futurestudents/studentforms.html) or on the forms that can be downloaded from that page.

Further Information on Postgraduate research degrees and application procedures can be obtained from the UNSW website at
http://www.unsw.edu.au/futureStudents/postgradResearch/res/postgradresearch.html

Information on projects and supervisors interests can be found in the Research section of this website.

COURSEWORK DEGREES

Applications for enrolment into a postgraduate coursework degree (Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma, Master of Science, and Technology and Master of Safety Science) can be made directly on line at https://www.apply.unsw.edu.au/. An application fee of $50 will apply to all online applications.

Applications can also be made by post by downloading one of the following forms:

NON-AWARD OR CROSS-INSTITUTIONAL STUDENTS

if you wish to enroll in a single course but not in a whole degree program you should fill in one of the non-award application forms:

By enrolling as an official non-award student you are registered as a student at UNSW. You have access to the library and UNSW resources and the course you are studying may be able to be counted as part of an award should you decide to enrol in an award program within the next 2-3 years.

CONTINUING EDUCATION STUDENTS

Continuing education students enrol in the workshop component of courses which are part of a degree program but do not complete the assessment. They receive a Certificate of Attendance rather than an official transcript with marks. For enrolment as a continuing education student, download the Continuing Education form (http://www.safesci.unsw.edu.au/downloads/Cont_Ed form_07.pdf) and submit the form directly to the School of Safety Science.

GENERAL NOTES

For Session 1 commencement, applications should be submitted by 30 November but may be accepted until 31 December if places are available. For Session 2 commencement, applications should be submitted by 31 May but may be accepted until 30 June if places are available.

If qualifications were not obtained at UNSW, a certified copy of the official academic transcript showing results obtained must be included. Please also provide details of work experience as this may affect your entry level to some programs. An application cannot be considered until all of this material is received.

An offer letter is sent to successful applicants. A Conditional Offer will be sent to those students who have met the academic requirements, but have not met the English language requirements. In most cases a Conditional Offer remains valid for one year. Students who are unsuccessful in their application will be notified in a letter from the Admissions Office. This letter will state the reason why an offer has not been made. To accept your offer, please follow the instructions on the offer letter. Offer acceptances cannot be processed without payment of a deposit to UNSW (International students only). Enrolment details are sent out early in January and enrolment takes place in January/early February.

The academic year starts on the Monday nearest to 1 March. It is possible to commence all programs in Session 2 which starts the last week in July. Full time students commencing in Session 2 may not be able to complete the course in the minimum time.
